2016 was another great year for Conference Services at UNB; we were able to grow our amazing team, host some fantastic conferences and events; and celebrate an award winning year!
Here are some highlights of 2016:
Conference Services Plans UNB’s Convocation
In a first for the University of New Brunswick, the graduation ceremonies were placed under the Special Events portfolio within our Conference Services department. With this added responsibility within our unit, we were able to hire a new member to join the Conference Services team, Judith Currie, who successfully planned her first internal event – UNB’s 62nd Fall Convocation! Next up, UNB’s 188th Encaenia, May 2017!
Supplier of the Year
The Wu Conference Centre was named MPI Atlantic Chapter‘s Supplier of the Year at the 2016 MPI awards dinner. This was a huge honour for us, and marked a milestone for Meeting Planners International – the first University or College Conference Services unit to win an Atlantic Chapter award! We look forward to providing the value, service and flexibility which won us this award, to our Wu Centre clients in the New Year.
See you in 2019 CWSF!
In 2015, UNB hosted the Canada-Wide Science Fair, a week-long celebration of Canada’s brightest youth. In early 2016, it was announced that UNB would be the Eastern host for this great event in 2019, and subsequently on rotation every 3 years for the next 9 years. We are excited to have some of the greatest, young Canadian minds in science, technology, engineering and math on the UNB campus in the coming years!
Julia McDevitt – Rising Star
Our Business Development Manager, Julia, had quite the year. Not only did she manage the Canada Wide Science Fair in Montreal, and 8 more conferences here at UNB, she was also nominated as the National Director of Marketing on the CUCCOA Board of Directors, and won the Rising Star award at the 2016 CUCCOA National Conference. Not to brag, but our Business Development Manager just might be the best in the business!
Macaulay O’Sullivan Award
Conference Services and UNB’s Centre for Enhanced Teaching and Learning won a 2016 Macaulay O’Sullivan award for their collaboration in developing and implementing an improved process for event and conference technology equipment requirements. The new system that was created has streamlined pricing for all events and conferences users, reduced administrative overhead and improved the efficiency, costs of providing services and simplified the entire process. The impact of this project can be felt throughout the university community as well as with our clients who receive complimentary AV equipment at the Wu Centre and in over 100 classrooms on campus!
Real Estate Professionals, Hockey Coaches, and Children’s Book Authors
The University of New Brunswick was host to many wonderful conferences throughout the year, and saw a variety of professionals on campus connecting with colleagues, continuing their learning and professional development, and enjoying the maritime hospitality! We managed the Hockey Conference, University Real Estate Officers Conference, Adult Education Conference, Children’s Literature and Literacy Conference, and ANTEC Conference to name a few.A favourite at many of the conferences we managed was our Maritime Kitchen Party; for AUREO we hosted the festivities at the Boyce Farmer’s Market.
We look forward to managing a diverse list of conferences in 2017!
